South Carolina-based Integrated Biometrics today announced the TazPoS, a ruggedized mobile fingerprint scanner with built-in point-of-sale (PoS) capabilities.

Developed with payment firm TazTag and designed for use in the developing world, the firm said TazPoS enables police to validate identity in the field, even under challenging environmental conditions.

Individuals have the option of paying fines and fees on the spot, rather than having to travel significant distances to courthouses or other government offices.

“Distance is a major challenge in North Africa, our initial market,” said Eric Fouchard, President of TazTag. “The spaces are immense, and travel takes people away from families or jobs for unacceptably long periods of time. TazPoS directly solves this challenge, giving governments the ability to bring essential services out to people where they live, rather than the other way around.”

TazPoS uses Integrated Biometrics’ Columbo product, an FBI certified FAP 30 scanner, as the core of its identity management system. Columbo’s light-emitting sensor (LES) technology makes it an ideal single-finger solution for temperature extremes, dirt, and other conditions.

“The possible applications of fingerprint scanning are endless,” added Stephen Thies, Chief Executive Officer of Integrated Biometrics. “TazPoS represents one of the many important and innovative uses for fingerprint biometrics in the marketplace. We are pleased to be working with TazTag, and they are to be commended for their vision and for introducing this exciting new handheld device.”

TazPoS will debut at GITEX Dubai in October 2017, with demonstrations at the TazTag booth, location Z-12 in Zabeel Hall.
