The Saudi government  has awarded a contract for pilgrims' biometric verification to Etimad, an Indian biometric verification firm operating from Dubai.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia had modified its Haj and Umrah laws to make biometric verification compulsory for pilgrims.

However, a plea in Pakistan's Supreme Court has expressed concern over Saudi Arabia awarding a contract for biometric verification of Haj and Umrah pilgrims to an Indian firm.

According to a report in the Dawn, the application, submitted by one Nadeem A Shaikh cites that handing over of Pakistani citizens' data to an Indian firm could be a concern for Pakistan's national security.

According to the report, the application mentions that India, Iran, Egypt and Bangladesh have refused to allow biometric verification of their pilgrims.
